Description
Swarkestone Old Hall and its attached garden walls are the ruins of a building constructed in the 16th and 18th centuries, with later alterations. It was built for the Harpur family. The structure features ashlar, rubble stone, and red brick, forming irregular rectangles of walls that are mostly about 10 feet high, though some parts are low and in ruins. The remains of the old hall include one wall that stands roughly 20 feet high and is made of rubble stone. The east face of this wall has three large four-centred arched fireplaces, with one on the ground floor and two above. One of the upper fireplaces is finely moulded and has brickwork at the back. There are also various other openings that are now difficult to identify.
On the north side, there is a rubble wall with triangular sectioned copings and a four-centred arched doorcase at the north end. Similar walls are present to the south and west, forming a rectangle, along with another rectangle of walls made of red brick, likely dating from the 18th century. The old hall was abandoned after the Civil War when the Harpur family relocated to Calke.
