Description

The Grange is a house built in 1703, constructed of red brick with painted stone dressings. It features a plain tile roof, brick coped gables with plain kneelers, and first and second floor brick bands. The moulded eaves cornice adds to its architectural detail. The symmetrical east elevation consists of five bays and is accessed by a flight of six steps leading up to a central doorcase, which has an eared architrave and a pediment supported by consoles. The entrance is marked by panelled double doors, flanked by two glazing bar sash windows on each side, with four panes over four under wedge brick lintels that have stepped keyblocks. Above, there are five similar windows, with five smaller ones above that.

Inside, the house features an open string staircase with carved tread ends and three turned balusters per tread, topped with a wreathed and ramped handrail. The upper flight showcases stick balusters from the later 18th century. A dentil cornice is present, and the north ground floor room boasts early 18th century panelling and a double cornice. There is an entablature and cornice on a late 18th century chimneypiece, along with a keyed round-arched china cupboard. The south room contains a 19th century marble chimneypiece and a late 18th century round-arched alcove. Another room features a small early 18th century bolection moulded stone chimneypiece and remnants of 17th century style panelling. The northwest wing includes a large room with late 18th century style decoration, which was converted into a picture gallery in the 1930s. The upper rooms to the east have panelled dados, an 18th century chimneypiece in the north room, and a 19th century Hopton Wood chimneypiece in the south room.
