Description
Smisby War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in 1920 by Reverend Marriott. It is made of marble and is situated on a triangular area of grass at the junction of Chapel Street, Forties Lane, and Main Street.
The memorial features a marble Latin cross that rises from a tapering plinth, which sits on a two-stepped base, with the lower step made of concrete. The cross-head is surrounded by a carved wreath of flowers, and each face of the plinth is recessed.
On the south face of the plinth, there is an inscription that reads: "ERECTED BY THE PARISHIONERS IN MEMORY OF SMISBY MEN WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918 R.I.P." The north face states "FOR KING AND COUNTRY," while the names of the four fallen soldiers are inscribed on the other sides.
The memorial is located on a square concreted area that is enclosed by iron railings.
