Description

Smisby Manor is a farmhouse dating from the 16th century, with additions and alterations in the 17th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It is built of coursed squared sandstone and red brick, with plain tile roofs and two brick ridge stacks and one between gables. The south elevation has seven irregular bays. The central two-and-a-half-bay section is tall and has twin gables. This section displays tall glazing bar sashes to the ground floor, wooden cross windows above, further 2-light casements above again, and blocked single lights in the gables. All windows are set within remains of recessed and chamfered surrounds. To the right, set back, is a projecting bay with a small single-light window. Further right is a similar window and French doors with gothic glazing. A long range is set back to the left, featuring a central ridge stack. A 19th-century open porch is situated in the angle, with four-centred arches on two sides, and includes a part-glazed door. To the left of the porch are two 20th-century 3-light casements, and to the left again, a 20th-century 2-light casement at half height. The first floor has two 2-light casements, a 20th-century 3-light casement, and is finished with shallow eyebrow dormers. The east elevation, with twin gables, has wooden cross windows to the ground floor, 2-light casements to the first floor, and two blocked single lights to the gables, all within chamfered surrounds. The interior is reported to have been extensively modernised but retains some exposed beams. A top-floor chimneypiece featuring a four-centred arch with a moulded surround and an 18th-century hobgrate remains.
