Description

Old Hall Wakelyn is a house that dates back to the 16th century, with parts rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries, and restored in the mid-20th century. It features a close studded and ornamental panelled timber frame set on a stone plinth with plaster infill, and some areas rebuilt in red brick. The roof is a combination of slate and plain tiles, with large brick stacks at the ridge and side walls. The building has an H-plan layout, two storeys plus attics, and three bays.

The south elevation shows that the ground floor has been mostly rebuilt in brick, retaining only the corner posts. The advanced bays each have a central window: a three-light window on the east and a four-light window on the west, both with diamond panes. The central section features a C20 door to the east and a four-light C20 window to the west. Above, there are three C20 oriel windows with diamond paned casements, surrounded by decorative timber work panels. The lower squares of the advanced bays display simple lozenge patterns, while the central section has panels divided into four, each with a quatrefoil design. The upper panels are adorned with large crosses that have oval cut-outs in the centre. The advanced bays also have jettied gables with quatrefoil panels and the blocked remains of three-light mullion attic windows.

The west elevation has its ground and first floors rebuilt in brick, but the jettied attic gables remain, featuring quatrefoil panels at the base and a splat baluster frieze above. The rear elevation has also been significantly rebuilt in brick, although the eastern crosswing retains a considerable amount of close studding on the first and attic floors. Inside, the house is said to contain chamfered beams, one inglenook fireplace, and part of the original staircase.
