Description

Hilton Lodge is a house built in the early 19th century, likely incorporating a core from the 18th century, with various minor later alterations and additions. It features rendered and painted brick with a shallow pitched, hipped slate roof and rendered side wall and ridge stacks. The building is two storeys high and has an irregular plan with three bays by five bays.

The south elevation showcases two full-height segmental bays, each containing triple, stepped Gothic traceried pointed full-height windows. The central window has double glazing bar doors, flanked by side windows with fixed panes. Above these, there are single pointed Gothic traceried glazing bar sashes for each bay, along with a similar narrower sash positioned between them.

On the west elevation, there is a lower range to the north featuring two pointed Gothic traceried glazing bar sashes, and a triple stepped window, similar to those on the south facade, in a single storey bow with a balcony above. The taller section to the south includes a shallow gabled porch with a pointed doorcase, which is decorated with small circles in the spandrels. The inner door is also pointed and features a glazed panelled design.

The rear elevation has a large late 19th-century addition to the east and a tall water tower with a hipped roof to the west, also from the late 19th century. Inside, the house boasts an elegant Hoptonwood marble staircase with stick balusters and a ramped and wreathed handrail. The drawing room features applied moulding panels and a re-set early 18th-century carved fireplace. The ground floor rooms are fitted with re-used mahogany panelled doors, and all rooms retain original reeded cornices.
