Description

Porter's Bridge, located on Wilne Lane in the parish of Shardlow and Great Wilne, is a canal bridge built in 1770 by engineer James Brindley, with some minor repairs made later. The bridge is constructed of red brick set on a rubble plinth, featuring stone dressings. It has a single segmental brick arch supported by stone impost blocks and tapering brick jambs. The plain brick parapets are topped with chamfered stone copings. The walls of the bridge curve outward at each end and terminate in plain piers. This structure was built as part of the Trent and Mersey Canal.
