Description

The outbuilding to the south of Hazelbarrow Farmhouse is a farm structure dating from the mid-17th century, with later alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is built from coursed squared coal measures sandstone and features quoins, topped with a hipped corrugated sheeting roof at the north end. The building is two storeys high and consists of eight bays, displaying an irregular pattern of openings. Many of these openings have 20th-century alterations, while others date back to the 17th century.

Originally, the openings likely included single quoined doorways and 2-light mullioned windows with hoodmoulds positioned between the doorways on the ground floor. The first floor would have featured taking-in doorways with quoined surrounds and mullioned windows beneath hoodmoulds at the north end. Currently, one quoined doorway remains unaltered near the centre on the ground floor, while two other doorways have been modified to become windows, and two 20th-century double doorways have been added, incorporating a fourth quoined doorway. The most northerly double door is situated beneath a continuous hoodmould that covers three adjacent openings to the north.

On the first floor at the north end, there is a former 2-light mullioned window, now fitted with 20th-century glazing, alongside a single light 17th-century window, both beneath hoodmoulds. Towards the centre of the first floor, a 2-light chamfered mullioned window remains, although one light is blocked. At the northern end, there is an inserted double doorway, and the north end wall features a single doorway with a chamfered quoined surround. The rear elevation preserves both single and 2-light 17th-century openings, some of which are mullioned. This building is included for its group value only.
