Description

The outbuilding located to the south-west of Unthank Hall is a Grade II* listed farm outbuilding, originally a threshing barn, dating from the early 17th century with later additions. It is constructed of thinly bedded coal measures sandstone set on a rough plinth of larger stones, featuring plain gables and a stone slate roof. The building is single storey with overlofts and consists of six bays, with an addition at the north end.

On the west elevation, there is an off-centre full height doorway with a quoined surround, along with plain planked doors. To the north, there are two wide rectangular openings with massive chamfered cills, which have been infilled with vertically set flagstones. Additionally, there are two doorways; one has a boarded door with a rectangular light beneath a plain stone lintel, while the other is topped with a wooden lintel.

Inside, the building features five massive cruck trusses that include tie and collar beams, with a yoke that supports a ridge purlin. The single purlins have scarf joints notched into the backs of the cruck blades, and there are straight wind braces on one side of each truss. On the east side, the padstones that support the trusses project from the wall base.
