Description

A farm building, likely dating to the late 16th century or earlier, was substantially remodelled in the 19th century and altered in the 20th century. Constructed of coursed rubble Coal Measures sandstone with ashlar quoins, it has a corrugated sheet roof. The building is in an 'L' shape. The south elevation features a single storey, three-bay façade with two single stable doorways at different heights, each with a small window to the side. The east bay has a full-height double opening, now with horizontal boarding to the upper half. Inside, there is one full-height cruck truss with collar and tie beams supporting single side purlins and a diagonally-set ridge purlin. A single spur tie remains, along with halving visible in the rice of the blade for the missing spur. Remnants of a smoke hood are also present at purlin level. The building is believed to have originally been a small, two-bay timber-framed house and represents a significant survival in an area where stone-built vernacular architecture is more common.
