Description
Knowles Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with significant alterations made in 1696, as well as changes in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed from coursed rubble gritstone with ashlar dressings, featuring quoins, plain gables, gable and ridge stacks, and a combination of stone slated and tiled roofs. The house is designed in an L-shape.
The southeast elevation has two storeys and five bays, with the two bays on the southwest being slightly taller. It includes two former 4-light late 17th century mullioned windows, with the 2-light opening featuring a dripmould that is integral with the window head, while the former 4-light opening retains a single mullion. There is a 19th-century opening on the first floor to the southwest. The lower three bays contain a central doorway with stone jambs and a lintel that is now blocked, featuring a circular window beneath a stepped hoodmould that extends southwest to cover a 4-light mullioned window, which includes a shallow 17th-century single light. Above this, there is a 2-light chamfer mullion, a single light opening above the door, and a 3-light recessed chamfer mullioned window to the northeast, along with a 2-light 20th-century chamfer mullioned window.
A single-storey 20th-century gabled porch is located at the northeast end. The rear elevations have been significantly altered but still show a former doorway near the angle of the two ranges, which features a plain hoodmould, stone jambs, and a deep lintel inscribed with "S AA 1696."
