Description
Cordwell Farmhouse is a late 17th-century farmhouse that was remodelled in the late 18th century. It is constructed of coursed rubble coal measures sandstone with ashlar dressings, featuring advanced quoins, coped gables with moulded kneelers, gable stacks, and a stone-slated roof. The house follows a double pile plan. The south elevation has two storeys and three bays, with glazing bar sashes, each containing 4 x 3 panes, set in flush stone surrounds. A central doorway is distinguished by a rusticated architrave, pulvinated frieze, and moulded cornice, leading to a six-panel door with the two upper panels glazed, and a rectangular overlight above. Inside, a 17th-century hearth is notable for its inscription on a massive, chamfered flat lintel that reads "R RP 1698". A small plaque on the hall wall of the front range is inscribed "Joseph Sybray Cordwell 1788".
