Description
Old Hall is a house located in Hadfield, built in 1646 with a late 17th-century addition and 20th-century alterations. The structure is made of narrow coursed millstone grit with ashlar dressings and features a stone slate roof with coped gables and kneelers. It has two brick ridge stacks and a single end stack.
The house has a three-unit single depth plan, with a later kitchen wing added to the rear. It stands two storeys tall and has a plinth with flush ashlar quoins. The street-facing side has three windows and an off-centre doorway featuring a plank door with a chamfered four-centre arched ashlar surround, a Tudor hoodmould, and a massive lintel inscribed with 'CH/ TA 1646'. To the left of the doorway is a two-light chamfered mullion window with a Tudor hoodmould, and to the right are a five-light and a lower three-light mullion window. There is a single blocked doorway beyond these windows. On the upper level, there are two three-light chamfered mullion windows and a similar two-light window, all positioned at eaves level.
The left side of the building features a four-light chamfered mullion window with a Tudor hoodmould, and above it is a three-light chamfered mullion window. The right side has been reordered in the 20th century. The rear main range includes an off-centre doorway with a modern glazed door, a four-light chamfered mullion window to the right, and a two-light window to the left, both with Tudor hoodmoulds. Above these is a three-light chamfered mullion window to the right and a two-light casement to the left.
The rear wing has a four-light chamfered mullion window with a Tudor hoodmould on the side front, and above it is a three-light casement in a chamfered surround. The gable end features a doorway with a flush ashlar surround and a plank door, along with a single casement to the right and another single casement above.
Inside, the house has stone flag floors, and the principal room showcases pronounced ovolo moulded beams with small chamfer stops. Similar beams can be found in the parlour and kitchen.
