Description

A house built in the late 18th century, later divided into two separate dwellings at numbers 5 and 7 The Cross in Glossop. The building is constructed of millstone grit rubble with ashlar dressings. The roof is covered in stone slate to number 5 and modern tiles to number 7, featuring coped gables and four rendered stacks.

The front of the building has a rusticated plinth, ground floor sill band, first floor band, a moulded cornice, a parapet, rusticated quoins, and six windows arranged in a 2:4 pattern. Number 5, on the right-hand side, has a pair of off-centre doorways with moulded ashlar surrounds and flat hood mouldings; the left doorway has a panelled door and overlight, while the right doorway is now blocked. To the right of the doorways is a single window, and to the left are two windows, all with ashlar surrounds and modern casements. Above are four similar windows. Number 7, on the left-hand side, has an inserted four-light casement window at ground level and two windows above with ashlar surrounds and modern casements. Between the two houses is a section of original quoining to the ground floor, as well as a lead rainwater downpipe and hood.

The left return has a modern gabled porch and a four-light window on the ground floor, with a single window above, featuring an ashlar surround and a modern casement. There are signs of blocked openings in the middle of the building. To the rear, there is a three-light casement window on the ground floor and a four-light flush mullion window above.

The interior of number 5 includes a staircase rising from the hall to a half landing.
