Description
The Elms Farmhouse is a farmhouse built in 1704, with later additions around 1780 and in the early 19th century. It is constructed from coursed squared gritstone with gritstone dressings and features hipped roofs made of Welsh slate and plain tiles. The building has two ashlar ridge stacks on the west range and both ridge and lateral stacks on the east range. It displays a moulded eaves cornice and a blocking course.
The east range is two storeys high, while the west range is three storeys. The late 18th-century west range has a three-bay west elevation, with the central bay slightly advanced. It features a pedimented ashlar doorcase supported by Tuscan Doric columns, with a pair of 19th-century half-glazed doors. This is flanked on each side by glazing bar sash windows that have stone lintels, jambs, and sills. Above, there are three similar windows and three smaller windows above those.
The two-storey east range has an early 19th-century east elevation with three bays. It includes a central round-arched doorway with impost blocks and a half-glazed door, flanked by glazing bar sash windows with stone lintels, jambs, and sills. There are three similar windows above. On the north side, there is a 2-light recessed and chamfered mullioned window, likely from the early 18th century. The south side features a late 19th-century Jacobean-style canted bay window, which was taken from the nearby demolished house known as 'The Outwoods'.
Inside, the farmhouse boasts a late 18th-century open string staircase with stick balusters, carved tread ends, and a wreathed handrail.
