Description
The School House and Garden Wall is a former school and schoolmaster's house, now a residential property, built in 1856 with 20th-century additions for Thomas Evans. The building is constructed of red brick with brick dressings and features a plain tile roof with overhanging eaves. It has brick gable end and side wall stacks, along with a small bracketed timber bellcote topped with a tiled roof on the west gable. The structure is two storeys high with a single storey, forming a roughly T-plan layout that includes a two-bay house to the east and a two-bay school room at right angles.
A gabled 20th-century porch with a cambered headed doorcase is located at the front of the 20th-century single bay addition. The school room to the west has two 3-light casement windows featuring diamond metal lights, set under cambered heads with chamfered brick jambs. The west gable wall includes a larger 3-light transomed window under a similar cambered head, above which is a clock face. Adjacent to the 20th-century addition is the schoolmaster's house, which has a 2-light casement window under a cambered head with chamfered jambs, and a similar window above, along with a blocked ventilation slit in the gable. The east facade also features similar 2-light windows.
Surrounding the house is a brick garden wall to the north and west, which has triangular sectioned stone copings and stone gate piers. Notably, there are vitrified headers in the curve of the wall that inscribe 'TWE 1856' as it changes direction. The building is included for its group value only.
