Description

The Church of St Mary is a Grade II* listed building located on Ashbourne Road in Mapleton. It was built in the mid-18th century and is constructed from coursed limestone with sandstone dressings. The church features a west tower, nave, and chancel that are integrated into one structure.

The west tower has a plain lower stage with slit staircase windows on the north and south sides. It includes a west porch with a flat hood supported by two Tuscan columns. The doorway has a semi-circular moulded arch with a projecting keystone and imposts, leading to six panelled, raised and fielded double doors. Above the tower is a shallow bell stage divided by a string band, with angle quoins and an elongated circular bell opening on each face, topped by a cornice and an octagonal dome with a stone lantern.

The nave and chancel are adorned with quoins and a cornice, and each elevation has three round-arched windows with raised stone surrounds, imposts, and keystones, including a similar window on the east side. The interior is plain and was altered in the 19th century, featuring a west gallery with a panelled front supported by two slender iron columns. There is no division between the nave and chancel, and a panelled dado runs along the walls.

On the north wall, there are several 19th-century brasses commemorating members of the Goodwin family, including one for Francis Goodwin (1808-1895) and another for Richard Goodwin-Gladwin (1895), signed by James Hardman & Co of Birmingham. The east window contains stained glass created in 1926 by A J Davies of the Bromsgrove Guild, and there is a painted organ case within the church.
