Description

Mill House is a house that was formerly a farmhouse, built in the early to mid-18th century. It is constructed of whitewashed red brick and features a plain tile roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a symmetrical three-bay entrance front that includes a central doorway with a four-panel 19th-century door and a 20th-century timber canopy. On either side of the entrance and on the first floor, there are 2-light casement windows with cambered heads, and gable stacks are located on each side. The right gable reveal has a projecting addition on the ground floor, while the left gable reveal features renewed brickwork and a four-pane window. At the rear, there is a ground floor lean-to at the center, which appears to be a later addition.

Inside, the house has softwood, vertically boarded doors on both floors. The central corridor is cross-axial and contains a fine open-well staircase with stout turned balusters and half-balusters attached to the square newels, along with a moulded handrail. Some of the balusters have been replaced, and the upper flights feature splat balusters of two different designs, including s-shaped types on the top landing. This early 18th-century farmhouse has a well-designed symmetrical front that was once mirrored on the rear, and it showcases a notable example of a contemporary open-well staircase with turned and splat balusters.
