Description
The Barley Mow Inn is a public house dated 1683, as indicated by a sundial on the street elevation, with a rear wing dating to around 1600. The building has a T-plan layout. The rear wing is constructed of coursed squared gritstone and features a plain tile roof with a stone-coped gable. It is two storeys high, with an irregular arrangement of windows on the west elevation. This includes a central doorway with a stone lintel and quoins, flanked by four-light chamfered mullion windows, a two-light chamfered mullion window, and a single light window. On the first floor, there is one single light window and two later leaded casements.
The main range is located on the south elevation and is made of dressed gritstone with a plain tile roof, featuring stone-coped gables topped with ball finials and a parapet. It has brick gable end stacks and a twin-gabled front, also two storeys high with attics. The front has two bays with two-light window openings that have ovolo moulded mullions and leaded casements. The entrance is on the left side of the facade, featuring a stone-framed doorway with a cambered stone head and a dripmould above, leading to a 20th-century studded oak door. The west gable end has three moulded mullion windows, with the lower two blocked, and a single attic window.
Inside, the original plan remains largely undisturbed, showcasing a rare example of an intact 19th-century public house interior. Notable features include exposed ceiling beams, a quarry tiled floor, a cast iron range, and wooden settles.
