Description

Smalley Lodge is a lodge house built in 1861 by W E Nesfield for the Miller-Mundys of Shipley Hall. It is constructed of red brick, featuring yellow and blue brick bands, as well as a stone band at sill level on the ground floor and painted stone dressings. The lodge has a steeply pitched red plain tile roof with lapped stone coped gables, ridge finials, and painted moulded kneelers. There are two external side wall brick stacks, with the one on the east wall having a corbelled stone cornice and a painted stone plaque inscribed '1861 AM'.

The building is a single storey plus attics and has a roughly T-plan, designed in an 'Old English' style. The north elevation features an advanced gabled bay to the east, with the roof extended to the west to create a porch. The centre of the bay has a canted bay window with chamfered lintels and sills, casements, and stone banding on the brick piers. To the west is a Caernarvon arched porch doorcase adorned with carved roundels and a cambered top lintel, leading to a plank door with elaborate hinges. Adjacent to the porch are two small adjoining casements, and further west is a 2-light casement window with a pointed relieving arch above, infilled with decorative brickwork.

The west gable wall features a central 3-light casement window, also with a relieving arch and decorative brick infill, which includes a painted stone plaque displaying the crest of the Miller-Mundy family. Above this is a taller 2-light window with a relieving arch and a different style of decorative brickwork.
