Description
The wall and well head at Smalley Lodge were built in 1861 by W E Nesfield for the Miller-Mundys of Shipley Hall. The wall runs at right angles to the lodge and marks the former western boundary of Shipley Hall Park. It features a red brick base with a stone balustrade in 'Old English' style above, characterized by tapered balusters and ridgeback copings. At the north end, there is an octagonal brick pier with moulded stone coping, while the south end has a later stone pier. Slightly to the east of the wall is the well head, which has a plain brick base topped with a thick oak rail. The well head has a light timber superstructure made of three banded posts that support a conical slate roof with a tall leaded finial. The top of the well is now covered with concrete.
