Description
The Former Newlands Inn is a public house dating from the early 19th century, with some alterations and additions made in the 20th century. It is constructed of red brick, rendered on the street side, and features brick and stucco dressings. The building has hipped roofs covered with plain tiles and slate, with a brick ridge stack on the north range and a brick side wall stack on the south range.
The structure is two storeys tall and has a T-plan layout, consisting of a three-bay south range and a four-bay north range. The south elevation includes an off-centre panelled door with a margin glazed overlight, flanked by glazing bar sashes—two to the east and one to the west. There are also two 20th-century inserted openings between the western sash and the door. Above, there are three glazing bar sashes, with all openings set beneath flat brick arches.
The street elevation features a blank wall on the south range and a large 20th-century glazed porch on the north range, which covers two 20th-century doors. This porch is flanked by glazing bar sashes and has two 20th-century casements to the north. Above the porch, there are four glazing bar sashes, with all openings below stuccoed flat arches and projecting sills. The roof above has stepped eaves and is covered with plain tiles.
The building was likely constructed to serve the traffic on the nearby Cromford Canal.
