Description
The hall in Jessop Park, located to the south of the monument, is a recreational building constructed around 1854 by the Butterley Iron Company. It features coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and a slate roof that has a vented ridge, full-length roof lights on either side, and stone-coped gables with dentilled eaves bands. The structure is single-storey and five bays long, with a plinth and clasping corner pilasters.
The gabled north elevation has a large semi-circular headed doorcase at the center, which includes double panelled doors and flanking pilasters. Above this, the pedimented gable displays five stepped semi-circular headed windows in the center, with slightly advanced panels on the sides. The side elevations also have similar central doorcases flanked by pairs of pilasters, with blank walls in between.
Inside, the hall features iron strut roof trusses that support a very wide span. This building was established in Jessop Park, a recreational area created for the workers of the Butterley Iron Company.
