Description
Benthill is a farmhouse dating from the early 18th century, with later remodelling. It is constructed of coursed rubble gritstone, featuring more finely dressed stonework on the south-west bay. The building has quoins, coped gables with moulded kneelers, and both brick and stone stacks at the intermediate and gable ends. The roof is slated, with stone-slated eaves. The house has an 'L' plan layout with gabled offshoots at the rear.
The south-east elevation presents an irregular facade, with stacked former 3-light flush mullioned windows at the south-west end bay. The ground floor opening has been altered to accommodate a glazing bar sash. Above the doorway in the second bay is a blocked single light opening, framed by a massive quoined surround and lintel, topped with a shallow bracketed hood. The door here is a 20th-century design with a glazed light. The third bay features a sash frame in a flush surround on the first floor, above a 2-light flush mullioned window with casements to the north-east, and another doorway with a massive surround and a 20th-century half-glazed door. The third bay also has a leaded window in a flush surround, above a sash frame in a flush surround. There is a plain stone-framed opening at floor level in the fourth bay.
