Description
Chase Cliffe is a small country house built between 1859 and 1861 by architect Ferrey. It is constructed from regularly coursed gritstone with ashlar dressings, sitting on a shallow chamfered plinth. The building features quoins, coped gables with moulded kneelers, ball finials, and large stone ridge stacks with prominently projecting moulded caps, all topped with stone slate roofs. The design is asymmetrical and follows an irregular 'T' plan, with the main east-west range having a central subsidiary wing that extends northwards. The east end of the main range is set back and lower than the west end. The roofline is elaborately gabled, reflecting the style of the local 17th-century vernacular. The house primarily has chamfered mullioned and transomed windows, with some Gothic detailing found in the doorways and window heads. It generally consists of two storeys with attics, including some gabled dormers in the lower ranges. The principal doorway is located on the north elevation of the main range, featuring a segmental pointed arch within a moulded surround and a hoodmould with dropped stops. This doorway has half-glazed double doors with Gothic glazing. Above the entrance is a canted oriel window with a plain parapet. The south elevation's east end includes an open four-bay arcade with segmental pointed arches that rise from octagonal piers.
