Description
The portal to Stephenson's Tunnel in Crich is a tramway tunnel entrance built in 1841 by George Stephenson. It is positioned directly against a vertical rock outcrop. The portal is made of gritstone blocks arranged in courses on a projecting plinth. The entrance features a stilted, semi-circular archway with voussoirs made from a single course of gritstone blocks. The opening is currently infilled. Historical maps from the Ordnance Survey indicate that the tunnel is short, running beneath Sandy Lane and originally emerging in what is now a private garden next to the Fire Station.
