DERBY ROAD (East Side) Herbert Strutt School

2. 1908. Architects Hunter and Woodhouse of Belper. Patron G H Strutt. (Sutton R 'The Herbert Strutt School'). Essentially a symmetrical composition, the school stands in an embanked garden above road. Stone from Strutt quarry in Makeney, rusticated with Matlock stone dressings and Westmoreland green slated roof. Jacobean style. Centre block of 2 storeys with centre fleche spire. Coped gable ends with chimneys. Five long windows with paired arched lights, the centre 3 under gables. Flanking single storey gabled blocks, the southern one has rear tower. Each of these linked by arcade to outer, 2 storey, wings. Windows with mullions, transoms and leaded glazing. Building designed to harmonize with G Scott's workhouse (now Babington Hospital qv) opposite.
