Description

Herbert Strutt School, built in 1908, was designed by architects Hunter and Woodhouse of Belper and was commissioned by G H Strutt. The school features a symmetrical design and is situated in an elevated garden above the road. It is constructed from stone sourced from Strutt quarry in Makeney, with rusticated surfaces and Matlock stone dressings, topped with a Westmoreland green slated roof. The building is designed in the Jacobean style, with a central block that is two storeys high and includes a fleche spire. The gable ends are coped and feature chimneys. There are five long windows with paired arched lights, with the three central windows positioned under gables. Flanking the central block are single-storey gabled sections, one of which has a rear tower. These sections are connected by an arcade to the outer two-storey wings, which have windows with mullions, transoms, and leaded glazing. The design of the school is intended to harmonize with G. Scott's workhouse, which is now Babington Hospital, located opposite.
