Description

The north range of the eastern courtyard at Babington Hospital, built around 1838 but not shown on the Belper Tithe Map of 1844, is attributed to the architect Sir George Gilbert Scott. Designed as a workhouse for the Belper Union, the building is in the Jacobean style and constructed of ashlar with quoins and a slate roof. It features an L-shaped wing, with the west end adjoining a similar western range. The building is composed of one and two storeys and has fenestration that matches that of the west range and the entrance lodge.
