Description

The Western Range to the Eastern Courtyard at Babington Hospital is a building dating from around 1838, although it does not appear on the Belper Tithe Map of 1844. It was likely designed between 1845 and 1850 by the architect Sir George Gilbert Scott as a workhouse for the Belper Union. The building is in the Jacobean style, constructed of ashlar with quoins and features a slate roof.

The central section is three storeys high and includes gabled dormers that rise above the eaves, along with a central lantern. On either side of the Tudor arched doorway, which has small flanking windows, are three storeyed canted bays. The windows are primarily latticed iron glazing, except for the main windows on the lower two storeys. The rear elevation features a central gable, while the outer wings are two storeys tall and have three gabled dormers that also break through the eaves, with five windows each below. Some modern glazing has been added.
