Description

Milford County Junior Mixed and Infants School is a building from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with later 19th-century additions. It appears to have been constructed in two parts for different functions. The school is situated on a sloping site, with the upper floor at street level on the west side and an arcaded ground floor at a lower level on the east side. The ground floor was reportedly used for Strutt wagons, while the upper floor served as the school, which it remains today.

The building is made of coursed stone and has a slate roof featuring large cowl ventilators. It has an angled, symmetrical design with an acute center angle that includes a porch on the street elevation and a flattened stone bow that extends through both floors to the rear. The street facade has twelve windows, which are paired sashes with small panes and cast iron glazing bars. The central stone porch has a panelled door with a fanlight above, and the inner door is similar. Some of the windows have bricked-up panels below them, which may have previously provided access to the arcaded rear stalls.

The rear facade includes part of the arcaded ground floor, which has been filled in, and features paired windows similar to those on the street elevation, along with a window in the bowed flat-roofed center bay. A sill band runs around the building at first-floor level, and there is a later extension at the north end. Inside, the school has very light iron ceiling trusses, likely from the later 19th century, although the rear may have been altered. There is also a walled rear playground.
