Description

The former well house, dating from the late 18th century, is located to the north of No. 14 on Well Lane in Belper. It is constructed from coursed squared stone and features a rectangular chamber with a stone lintel above the entrance, which leads down steps to the water source. There are smaller steps at the side, likely intended for lodging buckets. The structure has stone walls and a ceiling, and it is partly underground. This well house is an unusual survival from the period, representing a former public water supply. It forms a group with Nos 8-12, 12A, and 14 Well Lane.
