Description

Building 51 Milford Dyehouse, said to have been built in 1832, is a notable example of late development in fireproof construction methods pioneered by William Strutt, who died in 1830. The building is constructed from coursed stone and features a hipped slate roof. It has an L-shaped design, with the eastern wall curving slightly along the bank of the mill goit, which is now mostly in a culvert. The structure is two storeys tall and has a vaulted construction with brick floors above. It includes iron beams and cast iron columns connected by wrought iron tie rods, with the spandrels filled with sand. The building is eight bays long and two asymmetrical bays wide.

Recently restored, the eastern facade showcases seven pairs of iron-framed Strutt windows, each with a central casement. At the low first floor level on the north end of this facade, there are double loading doors. The south end of the mill goit was opened up during restoration, and a new stone wall at the rear contains a mill bell dated 1781. To the east of this, there are re-erected columns from the former Building 52, with a brick arch above, leading to stone gate piers and cast iron gates adorned with bands, roundels, and arms.
