Description
The Church of St John the Baptist is a Grade II listed building located on the north side of The Butts. Founded around 1260 as a Forester's Chapel in Duffield Frith, this small Church of England structure is made of coursed stone rubble and features a single roof over the nave and chancel. It has buttresses at both the east and west ends, and the tiled roof is topped with coped gables and a bellcote at the west end. While the church generally reflects the Early English architectural style, it was restored in 1870. The south porch dates back to 1634.
Inside, the church houses a very rare Pre-Reformation altar table that has never been disturbed, with only three others known to exist. Additional interior features include sedilia, a piscina, and a 15th-century font. The roof contains five ancient beams, which are likely to have been reset. The building was also used as a school sometime after the Reformation and is set in a picturesque churchyard.
