Description

The Parish Church of St Peter is a Church of England building constructed in 1824, designed by architect Mathew Habershon, with designs exhibited at the Royal Academy that same year. It underwent restoration in 1884 and is built from local grit stone sourced from Hunger Hill Quarry. The church features a west tower, nave, sanctuary, and galleries, with a modified layout that incorporates part of the nave as a chancel. It is designed in the Decorated style, characterized by a tall, slender west tower topped with a crenellated parapet and a quatrefoil band below. The tower has angle buttresses that rise to polygonal corner turrets, and the ground floor serves as a porch entrance. The facade includes five tall, two-stage windows separated by buttresses.

Inside, there are west, north, and south galleries supported on cast iron columns. A Gothick arch spans the sanctuary, which houses wall tablets commemorating members of the Strutt family. There is also a monument to George Brettle, created in 1835 by Sir Richard Westmacott. The church is situated on a hillside, making the tower a prominent landmark in the area.
