Description
Waingroves War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with later additions. It is made of sandstone and is situated next to Waingroves Methodist Church on Waingroves Road.
The memorial features a wheel-headed cross, which has a Sword of Sacrifice carved in relief on the north-east face of both the cross head and shaft. The cross shaft rises from a tapering two-stepped plinth that is set on a square base with a brick edge. The inscriptions on the memorial are incised and highlighted in gold. The north-east face of both steps of the plinth includes inset stone tablets.
On the base of the north-east face of the cross shaft, the inscription reads "BY THEIR/ SACRIFICE/ WE LIVE." The north-east face of the top step of the plinth has the inscription "ERECTED BY THE INHABITANTS OF THE/ WAINGROVES WARD TO THE MEMORY OF THE/ FOLLOWING WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918" followed by 13 names. The face of the plinth step below it states "ALSO IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO FELL IN THE WAR/ 1939 – 1945" along with 7 names and the phrase "FOR FREEDOM THEY DIED." Additionally, the south-east face of the top step of the plinth carries the inscription of one name related to Afghanistan 2007.
