Description
Culgaith War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1922, located on a green by the roadside of the B6412 in Culgaith, Cumbria. It is prominently positioned facing a main road junction in the village. The memorial features a red sandstone wheel-head cross decorated with Celtic-style scrollwork carving in relief, set on a plinth with a two-stepped base. Surrounding the memorial is a red sandstone hexagonal paved area enclosed by a low kerb and six post pads that support ornamental iron posts and chain. The base of the shaft includes a dedication in relief carved lettering, while the plinth and stepped base display the names of the fallen in incised lettering. The inscription reads: "TO/ OUR/ GLORIOUS/ DEAD/ 1914 – 1918// (NAMES)// GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS/ THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS// (NAMES)."
