Description
The road bridge over the River Derwent, located in the parish of Alderwasley, dates from the late 18th century. It is constructed of ashlar and coursed rubble gritstone. The bridge features a double arch design with pointed cutwaters on both the upstream and downstream sides. There are plain pilasters at the top of the half-cutwaters on the west side and where the ashlar meets the rubblework on the east side. The semi-circular arches have plain wide bands at their heads, and the bridge has a shallow parapet with ridged coping. On the west abutment, there are three smaller openings with stilted semi-circular arches and cutwaters in between. Additionally, at the western end of the west abutment, an arched opening allows the tail race from the wire mills to the northwest to pass through before it rejoins the River Derwent to the south of the bridge.
