Description
Nos 6, 7, 8 and 9 Midland Terrace is a terrace of four cottages built around 1840, with some minor later alterations. The cottages are constructed of tooled ashlar with stone dressing and feature slate roofs. They have corniced stone gable end stacks and one ridge stack, with stone coped gables on Nos 8 and 9. The terrace is two storeys high, with each cottage typically having two bays, except for No 6. The two northern cottages are slightly higher and set forward.
The southern cottages, Nos 6 and 7, have pilastered doorcases with raised imposts and bases, a plain frieze, and bracketed stone hoods. They each have a six-panelled door with margin glazed overlights, positioned one to the far left and one to the right. Between these doors is a narrow eight-pane sash window to the left and a twelve-pane sash window to the right. Above, there are three twelve-pane sash windows, all set below plain lintels and featuring projecting sills. The eaves have a coved band.
The northern cottages have a similar doorcase and door that is slightly off-centre, with a narrow eight-pane window to the right and a twelve-pane window beyond, plus a similar twelve-pane window to the far left. Above these, there are two narrow eight-pane windows in the centre flanked by twelve-pane windows. The windows here are also below plain lintels and have projecting sills, although the fenestration is from the 20th century. The eaves also have a coved band.
These cottages were built to accommodate railway workers for Ambergate Station, which opened in 1840 as part of the North Midland Railway.
