Description
The Half Penny Bridge over the River Derwent is a road bridge built in 1792 by local industrialist Francis Hurt. It is constructed from ashlar and coursed rubble gritstone. The bridge features two wide segmental arches with triangular sectioned cutwaters located at the center and west sides. There are pilasters on both sides at the east. The cutwaters rise into the parapets, which have a plain band above the arches and flat copings. To the west, there is a rubble abutment that includes five stilted semi-circular arches with low cutwaters in between, and further west, a segmental arch spans the tail race from the Wire Works downstream. The bridge has plain rubble parapets.
