Description
Bridge number 43 near Toad Moor Tunnel is a railway bridge built between 1838 and 1840 by George Stephenson. It is constructed of ashlar stone with a rock-faced finish and tooled dressings. The bridge features a wide segmental arch made of radiating voussoirs set on rock-faced jambs, with a raised impost band. Above the arch, there is a large roll-moulded band at a steep angle, topped by a blocking course and later blue brick parapets. This bridge was built as part of the North Midland Railway, which opened in 1840.
