Description
Hambleton Hall is a country house, now functioning as a hotel, built in 1881 for Walter Marshall in a picturesque old English style. The building features coursed and squared rubble with ashlar dressings and tile hanging on the first floor, topped with a plain tiled roof and moulded stone ridge stacks. The entrance front is asymmetrical and consists of two storeys with attics. To the left, there is a single-storey range, followed by a projecting gable that has a first-floor oriel window, jettied on brackets above the windows. The central range includes a dormer gable framed by a climber, which jetties over a canted bay window that lights the stairs. To the right, there is an ornate gabled porch with the date and motto: "Fay ce que voudras". The building features various mullion and transom windows and dormers. A massive stone stack with a crow-stepped gable and twin tall octagonal shafts projects to the right. The south front is also asymmetrical, showcasing two two-storey embattled bay windows on the left, one of which has mullion and transom windows with gables above, and one bears a sundial. Beyond these, there is another jettied gable. The interior is elaborately decorated with ornate fireplaces, plasterwork, inglenook corners, and other features presented in a very eclectic manner.
