Description

The Post Office Cottages comprise a post office and a row of three cottages, dating from the early 20th century and built in an Arts and Crafts style. The building is loosely symmetrical, featuring a central range flanked by gabled sections. It is constructed of coursed squared rubble, with some half-timbering, and has a stone-tiled roof. The building is one and a half storeys high.

The left-hand gable has a stone mullioned bay window to the ground floor and an oriel window set within a jettied, half-timbered gable above. A clock and a copper post and telegraph sign are incorporated into the gable. The right-hand gable is similarly designed, but with a two-storey stone mullioned bay window. The central range contains two doorways with three-centred arches, a variety of stone mullioned windows, and a single timber-framed gable dormer. All windows have decorative small panes. Various gable and axial stacks are present throughout the building.

To the extreme right, beyond the gable, is a projecting bay facing west, featuring a full-height canted bay window set within a jettied gable and overhanging eaves. The post office’s entrance is located in the west wall of the front gable, with a three-centred arched doorway situated beneath an expressed chimney. A copper engraved shield is also affixed to the doorway.
