Description

The dovecote at Home Farm, likely built in the 18th century, is constructed of coursed local limestone rubble with some ashlar on the north-east elevation and features a pantile roof. Located at the south end of the farmstead, it has a rectangular, almost square plan and is designed as a double-height tower dovecote with a steeply pitched roof that exposes the rafters at the gable ends.

The principal south-east elevation showcases wide, centrally placed double-leaf doors, which are not original, set under a timber lintel. Below the eaves, three cross-shaped tie plates are visible. On the south-west elevation, there was once a small square opening for doves, now blocked with red brick, and the shadow of a former single-storey building can be seen, along with a rectangular patch of render likely related to when this was an internal wall. The north-east elevation features large ashlar quoins at its north corner, while the rear elevation is partially obscured by ivy and is blind.

Inside, the dovecote is a single open space extending up to the rafters, lined with stone nesting boxes along the south-west and south-east walls, and about one third of the north-west wall. The remaining internal walls show no signs of nesting boxes. The roof structure consists of common rafters with through purlins, which were reinforced in the 20th century with two tie beams and a bridging beam.
