Description

No 6 Main Street is a house dated 1646, as indicated by a plaque on the gable end. Another worn plaque above states that it was rebuilt by Sir Michael Seymour of Rockingham Castle in 1949. The front gable end features large blocks of semi-dressed ironstone, while the left side is partially banded with ironstone and limestone rubble. The rear gable and right side are made of pinkish rubble limestone, all raised in 20th-century ironstone rubble. The roof is covered with 20th-century concrete tiles and there are two brick chimneys. The house is positioned at right angles to the road and has two storeys with two bays; the far bay was formerly an outbuilding.

The gable end displays mutilated 17th-century windows with ovolo-moulded stone surrounds and cyma recta cornices, originally designed as three-light windows, but now with the mullions removed and replaced by 20th-century horizontal sliding sashes. The lower opening was once a doorway. The 17th-century date plaque also features a cornice. The left side has three wooden casements on the ground floor, consisting of a three-light window flanking a two-light window, all with wooden lintels, and three 20th-century paired metal casements with concrete lintels on the first floor. There is a central boarded door. The right side has a casement window and a blocked slit from the former outbuilding.
