Description

The garden buildings and adjoining boundary wall at Castle Museum date from the early 19th century, with additions made around 1877-78 and further modifications in the mid-20th century. The structure is made of coursed squared stone and brick, featuring ashlar dressings and a hipped slate roof with a rendered ridge stack. It is a single-storey building with a three-window range, including two large casements with wooden mullions, arranged in two and three lights. On the left side, there is a 19th-century four-panel door, followed by a large board door. The right return includes a porch supported by wooden Ionic columns and a pediment, leading to a moulded six-panel door and fanlight. There are flat-roofed and lean-to additions from the 19th and 20th centuries on both sides of the building.

The rear of the building serves as part of the boundary wall for the castle grounds, which extends from the north gateway to the garden buildings, approximately 3 meters high and 40 meters long, topped with slab coping. Beyond the garden building, there is an additional stretch of wall about 20 meters long, ending with an ashlar pier. Further along, a section of the wall is approximately 2 meters high and 60 meters long, featuring a segment-arched doorway. This boundary wall was likely constructed during improvements to access the Park in 1809 and 1821, with further alterations made by TC Hine in 1877-78. The wall is partly built on a natural rock outcrop.
