Description

Numbers 21 and 23 are a pair of houses with attached area balustrades and gate piers, built around 1838-1839, likely by PF Robinson, with the street front added between 1848 and 1850 by TC Hine for the 4th Duke of Newcastle. The buildings were altered in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. They are constructed of stucco with slate roofs and feature four coped side wall stacks. The design includes a rusticated basement, a first-floor band, a sill band, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course, with coped gables. Most windows are renewed plain sashes. The houses are two storeys plus a basement and have a four-window range. The garden front features a glazing bar sash and a plain sash in the basement, flanked by French windows. The upper floors have four windows arranged in diminishing courses with moulded surrounds, and giant Doric pilasters between the windows. To the right, there is a set-back side bay with two windows. The street front has a projecting center with two storeys and two coped gables. It includes two stucco Classical doorcases with fluted pilasters, pediments, and original six-panel doors with overlights, along with single side windows and four small sashes above. The side bays each have a triple sash on both floors. Outside, flanking the porch, there are three-meter lengths of coped balustrade leading to a pair of square gate piers with pyramidal caps at each end. Inside No. 21, some original plasterwork and marble fireplaces remain. This building is part of an early development scheme by the 4th Duke of Newcastle for the Park Estate.
