Description

Numbers 17 and 19 are a pair of houses constructed between 1838 and 1839 by PF Robinson for the 4th Duke of Newcastle, as part of an early development scheme for the Park Estate. The houses are stucco-faced with a slate roof, featuring four side wall stacks and one ridge stack. A sill band at the first floor, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course run along the front elevation. The three-storey houses, with a front basement, have a symmetrical facade with four window bays. The basement level has four French windows, two of which have been replaced. A cast-iron verandah with a felted tent roof shelters two French windows on the left side of the ground floor, alongside two plain sash windows to the right. The upper floors feature sash windows with moulded surrounds, diminishing in size with each floor. Giant Doric pilasters are placed between the windows. The rear of the houses includes a central, two-storey canted porch, with two doors at ground level and two sash windows above. A canted bay window, two storeys high, is located to the left, while a set-back wing dating to the mid-19th century with three storeys and a single bay is on the right. Three-metre lengths of patterned cast-iron area railing flank the porch on either side. Mid-19th century additions and alterations have been made, and the properties were restored in the late 20th century.
