Description
48 and 50 St Mary's Gate is a lace warehouse built in 1883, now used as offices. It was constructed by S & J Cargill of New Basford for W.A. Fowkes. The building features red brick with a rock-faced stone ground floor, ashlar dressings, and a clerestory topped with a slate roof. It has a plinth, a string course, bracketed sill bands on the upper floors, and elaborate moulded brick eaves. The windows are primarily original plain sashes with ashlar mullions and surrounds. The structure has three storeys plus a basement and attics, with a seven-window range. The ground floor includes segment-arched openings, a central tripartite window flanked by two single windows, and panelled double doors with fanlights. The basement has similar openings. The upper floors feature a central tripartite window flanked by three single windows, all with round-arched openings and hood moulds, while the second floor windows are smaller. The attics have a central coped gable with a finial and a tripartite window. The clerestory has continuous glazing with round-arched lights and dentillated wooden eaves. Inside, there is a wooden winder stair and a truss roof.
