Description
The cemetery chapels at Basford Cemetery, built in 1876, are now used as a store. They are designed in the Gothic Revival style, constructed from rockfaced stone with ashlar dressings and feature steeply pitched patterned slate roofs. The exterior includes a plinth, buttresses, a sill band, a corbel table, and coped gables with crosses, some of which are missing. The building is single-storey and has three bays arranged in an H-plan.
The entrance bay has side corridors and is flanked by chapels with eastern apses. It slightly projects and features an enriched pointed arched opening under a gable that contains a wheel window and a hood mould. There are pointed arched doors on either side of the entrance arch. Each corridor has three pointed arched openings with cast-iron grilles, with the center opening being taller. The chapels have west gables with granite corner shafts, two boarded windows, and a smaller lancet above, all with hood moulds.
On the north and south sides, there is an off-centre cusped doorway with granite shafts and hood moulds. The west side has a lancet, while the east side has two lancets. The apses feature three lancets and an additional lancet in the return angle. The rear of the building has a central segmental pointed archway with gargoyle stops, flanked by stacks, and beyond this are small two-light pointed arched windows.
Inside, the chapels are rendered and feature an arch-braced roof, with an apse that includes ribs, ringed wall shafts, and corbels.
