Description
The Scout War Memorial Gateway was erected in 1927 as a memorial to Scouts who died in the First World War. It marks the entrance to a Scout site, which includes a walled wood and a Scout hut linked by a World War II memorial avenue of trees.
The gateway consists of a central, gabled entranceway flanked by stepped red brick walls. The central entranceway is timber-framed on brick plinths, with red brick nogging laid in a herringbone pattern between the timber studding. It has a steeply pitched roof covered with handmade tiles, and timber fascia boards on both elevations. A pair of half-panelled timber gates with spindles to the upper openings are set within the entranceway. Attached to the timber lintel above the gates is a plaque inscribed with a verse, and above that, another plaque reads '24 NOTTM CAVENDISH SCOUT GROUP'. The flanking walls are of red brick with panels of herringbone brickwork and tiled copings.
The gateway is said to incorporate timbers from Trent Bridge, which was widened in 1926. It was dedicated on 21 August 1927 by the Chief Rover Scout Commissioner for England, and attended by the Duchess of Newcastle and the President of the Nottingham Boy Scout Association. A plaque within the Scout hut commemorates a World War II memorial avenue of trees, planted in thanksgiving for victory and in memory of Scouts who died in the war, and dedicated in 1946 by the Lord Bishop of Southwell and the County Commissioner. The designer is not known, but is believed to have been a member of the Scout Association and it was constructed by the Nottingham City District Rover Scouts.
